Working Comic: 6 Months. (podcast adventure with Josh Gondelman) – by Shawn Carter

Thursday March 5th marked 6 months of full time comedy for me.  I haven’t had a day job in that amount of time.  I haven’t become a starving artist but I’m not exactly thriving either.  I have a couple regular shows, Mondays at Sally O’Briens in Somerville and Tuesdays at Stadium in Quincy.  Along with a couple of bookers that have been kind enough to give me regular work.  However, I’m not going to be complacent having just enough to survive and worrying every time an unexpected expense comes up.

In an attempt to step up my game a little bit I decided to bring back my podcast and attempt to land the best guests possible.  After all this time doing comedy I have some friends that have went on to bigger and better things and wouldn’t it be great if I could get them on the show?  So I contacted my friend Josh Gondelman and asked him to be my guest on the show.   Josh is a comedian that spent years in Boston developing an act before recording his first stand up album ‘Everything’s the Best’.  He’s now a fancy TV writer in New York City.

I asked Josh if he would be interested in being on the podcast and he responded “Yeah!  I’d love to sometime!”.  His enthusiasm was surprising considering how many cool projects he’s got going on.  My podcast must be the least exciting thing, but what do I expect from a guy that named his CD ‘Everything’s the Best’.  Josh started comedy a few years before me and has provided me with some great opportunities from recommending me to a certain comedy club booker to handing down the show at Sally O’Briens to me when he left for New York.

Gondelman wasn’t going to be back in Boston for quite a while so I decided to go to him in NYC.  After going back and forth for a little while about which day would work best we decided to record it Monday morning.  Sunday, I took a bus down to New York.  My biggest traveling mistake was either A) not charging my phone before I left, or B) telling some random townie on my way to the T that I was going to NYC.  I mean I didn’t just volunteer this information to the townie. He yelled at me from across the street “Where are you going?”  and when I told him “New York”  he started yelling at me about how “New York SUCKS DUDE!” and “I got a B on my leg, you wanna see it.”.  Then I left Boston and thought that guy was nuts.  When I got to New York, within minutes I saw a homeless man urinate on the subway and after that I was unable to escape the stench.  I started thinking that townie may not have been so crazy after all.

Anyway, I got to Brooklyn and met up with my friend Taylor Connelly and we went to some shitty bar near his apartment.  We decided to play pool but the pool table didn’t have enough balls.  They’re missing the 5 and 15 balls.  We just drank a beer instead.  After that I went to Gondelman’s place, hung out with his supercool room-mates and then fell asleep.  In the morning we recorded the podcast.

I’m not much of a morning person so I may sound a little groggy on the podcast but luckily Josh is chipper enough for the both of us and I think we got a really fun and entertaining recording because of him.
